Professional chemicals for pool management & sanitation
Maintaining pristine water and hygienic surfaces requires specialized chemical solutions engineered for safety, water quality, and maximum bather comfort. Modern treatment systems rely on a strategic combination of disinfectants, chemical balancers, and specialized surface cleaners, tailored to the specific type of facility and its bather load.
Chlorine-based sanitizers
Sanitizers are the foundation of water treatment, essential for neutralizing bacteria, viruses, and organic contaminants.
Sodium hypochlorite
A high-efficacy liquid disinfectant, widely used in automated dosing systems for commercial and public pools. It ensures rapid bactericidal action and allows for precise dosage control.
Calcium hypochlorite
A high-strength granular disinfectant with concentrated active chlorine. It is the preferred choice for shock treatments or rapidly restoring water quality.
Stabilized chlorine (isocyanurates)
Available in tablets or granules, these products contain Cyanuric Acid (CYA). This stabilizer protects chlorine from UV degradation, making it ideal for outdoor facilities and residential pools.
Key difference: hypochlorites vs. isocyanurates
Hypochlorites provide free chlorine without stabilizers, making them perfect for professional facilities where precise disinfection control is mandatory.
Isocyanurates include stabilizers that protect chlorine from the sun; however, CYA levels must be monitored to prevent buildup over time (which can lead to “chlorine lock”).
pH Regulators
Maintaining the correct chemical balance is vital for both disinfectant efficacy and bather comfort.
pH Decreaser (pH-)
Acid-based products used to lower pH levels when they exceed the optimal range.
pH Increaser (pH+)
Alkaline products used to raise pH levels when the water becomes too acidic.
Impact of imbalanced pH
High pH (Basic, > 7.6)
- Low chlorine efficacy: chlorine loses its sanitizing power, compromising safety.
- Scaling & algae: lime scale buildup and ineffective sanitization lead to cloudy water and algae blooms.
- Equipment damage: scale deposits clog filters and piping.
- Bather discomfort: causes skin and eye irritation.
Low pH (Acidic, < 7.2)
- Corrosion: acidic water attacks metal components (heaters, ladders, pumps).
- Surface degradation: damages tile grout and liners, shortening the lifespan of pool finishes.
- Irritation: causes stinging eyes and skin irritation for swimmers.
- Unstable chlorine: chlorine is consumed much faster, even if levels appear correct.
Water clarity & finishing agents
Flocculants
Intensive agents that aggregate microscopic particles into larger “flocs,” allowing filters to trap them more effectively or causing them to settle for easy removal.
Clarifiers
Specialized polymers that improve visual water quality by removing turbidity and micro-particles.
Flocculants
- Best for: sand filters and emergency recovery (e.g., after storms or green water outbreaks).
- Note: generally not compatible with cartridge filters.
Clarifiers
- Best for: ongoing maintenance and weekly polish to keep water sparkling.
- Compatibility: broadly compatible with all filtration types, including cartridges.
Algaecides
Advanced formulas designed to prevent and eliminate algae growth on pool surfaces and in the water.
Main benefits of using anti-algae products
- Active Prevention: stops green, black, or yellow algae before they take hold.
- Safety: prevents walls and floors from becoming dangerously slippery.
- Efficiency: allows chlorine to work more effectively on pathogens rather than fighting algae.
Water balancing & oxidizers
Alkalinity increasers (TA+)
Sodium Bicarbonate-based products used to stabilize the water’s chemical balance and prevent sudden “pH bounce.”
Oxidizers & shock treatments
High-performance solutions used to eliminate organic matter and restore water clarity.
Oxidizing vs. shocking: know the difference
Non-Chlorine Oxidizers
These rapidly “burn off” organic impurities (sweat, oils) without producing unpleasant odors or chloramines.
Ideal for weekly maintenance; they don’t irritate eyes and allow for immediate swimming.
Shock Treatment (Superchlorination)
A heavy-duty chlorine blast designed to eliminate massive contamination, algae, or high levels of combined chlorine.
Essential after heavy use, storms, or for winterization.
Surface cleaning & hygiene
Beyond water quality, the hygiene of the surrounding environment is paramount.
Deck & tile cleaners
Specialized detergents that remove grease, organic residue, and limescale from pool edges and tiled surfaces.
Sanitizers & anti-fungals
Disinfecting solutions engineered to eliminate bacteria and fungi in damp areas like showers, changing rooms, and walkways.
Professional flooring disinfectants
High-standard sanitizers for high-traffic contact surfaces in public pools, spas, and hospitality facilities.
